AMMU DEEPA

Ammu Deepa is a contemporary Malayalam poet. She is celebrated for her bold and evocative poetry that explores themes of womanhood, autonomy, and resistance to societal norms. Hailing from Pattambi in Palakkad. Her poems are translated into English, Hindi, Marathi, and Bengali. Critics often consider Ammu Deepa’s poems as a good example of Malayalam post-feminist poetry. She holds an MA and MPhil in Malayalam Literature and is currently researching Micro Politics and Aesthetic Philosophy in O.V. Vijayan’s Short Stories at the University of Calicut. She has been an active literary voice for over fifteen years, with acclaimed poetry collections like Karinkutty (2019) and Irikkapporuthi (2022). Both published by DC Books and translated into multiple languages. Alongside her literary contributions, Ammu Deepa teaches in a school and is also an illustrator and painter.  Her verses delve into the experiences of adolescence filled with confidence, a childhood that challenges patriarchal boundaries, and married life that questions conventional spousal expectations. Rooted deeply in the essence of rural Kerala, Ammu Deepa’s poetry echoes the sounds, landscapes, and spirit of her native surroundings.
