Cheriya Manushyarum Valiya Lokavum was originally published as comic strips in a periodical, spanning 633 episodes from January 22, 1961 to December 2, 1973. Over the years, the Cheriya Manushyarum Valiya Lokavum cartoon has captivated readers with its unique portrayal of life through the eyes of Ramu, making it one of the most famous Malayalam comic strips. Although the series was previously compiled into two books, both editions were incomplete, containing only 402 pages each. For the first time, the entire graphic narrative is being published in its complete form, making it a landmark in Malayalam graphic novels.
This iconic Malayalam comic has been meticulously reconstructed over eight years, with more than 200 additional pages of cartoons added to the original work. The restoration was undertaken by renowned designers Artist Bhattathiri and Ramu Aravindan, who have used modern technology to revive the images and text, originally published over fifty years ago.
The world of comic books in Malayalam has seen many beloved works, such as the Amar Chitra Katha Malayalam series, including classics like the Amar Chitra Katha Mahabharata Malayalam. However, Cheriya Manushyarum Valiya Lokavum stands out as a pioneering work in the genre, pre-dating the recognition of the term graphic novel in Malayalam by many years. In 1964, the term ‘graphic novel’ was first coined, and in 1978, it gained popularity globally. But Cheriya Manushyarum Valiya Lokavum, as a cartoon novel, had already established its place as a groundbreaking work in old Malayalam comic books.
In addition to the complete Cheriya Manushyarum Valiya Lokavum novel, this edition includes over fifty other cartoons by G. Aravindan, offering a comprehensive look at the artist’s works. Also featured are studies by famous cartoonists E.P. Unni and Gokul, as well as an in-depth interview with Aravindan by Chandrahassan.
